Older Women In Nylons And Skirts At Work

Antidote against American idiot in full collapse of the XXI century

Green Day rose to fame back in 1994 with their album Dookie . Who would have thought then that this small group of pop / punk California, with catchy little songs and a singer who seemed to be always congested, was going to get fifteen years later become one of the standards of good popular music, but more importantly, become synonymous with music and conceptual daring?

There were signs on the road. The melodies of "Basket Case " or "When I Come Around " announce this gift to more to the Beatles to the Ramones or the Sex Pistols. The energetic ska sound of "Minority " return to the roots of American music with "Warning " and of course, the ballad " Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) " which bases its harmony a succession of chords used by folk / country century (G - Cadd9 - D - Em).

By then, punk was just a part of the musical establishment of Green Day. It was the power, strength, attitude. But there were also a number of elements that suggest a potential announcing a possible increase in quality. That was in 2005.

American Idiot is almost the result of an accident. The group had recorded a new album and the tapes were stolen from the studio. Instead of re-recording, they decided nothing more and nothing less than designing a masterpiece that takes the California punk band where none had been before. You could say that history holds patches, one can argue that the music business takes shortcuts. The truth is that massive music is always played with the music business. What is important in the equation is still precisely the music.
The disc opens with the raging title track, a perfect melody that puts us on track from the beginning: Do

Want to Be an American idiot.
That Do not want a nation under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria? The subliminal mindfuck America
.

Even more radical is the second track on the album "Jesus of suburbia , which lasts 9 minutes, has 5 parts (or sections) courses but distinguishable, and that was one of the cutting disk diffusion. Yes, this is the "Bohemian Rhapsody " band. The comparison may seem exaggerated but not in vain Billy Joe insists that Queen is one of the influences of the group. This issue introduces the subject from which the story is told that individualizes the disk (to show just a button):
I'm the
are of rage and love The Jesus of suburbia

From the bible of none of the Above
On a steady diet of Soda pop and Ritalin

Clearly, these lyrics also owe something to Roger Waters neurotic '70s, have little to do with the naivete of the era Dookie. Then, the disc emphasizes topics such as "Holiday ", which among other things will pass a line that was not easy to say at that particular time:

Pulverize the Eiffel towers Who criticize your Government
!

The disc wrong course once. For the hits "Boulevard of Broken Dreams, "" Wake Me Up When Septermber ends "joins the epic sound of" Are we the waiting "and" Give Me Novacaine "apart from the punk fury of" St. Jimmy "and uptempo rocker " Letterbomb " which asks:

Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures Itself?
And Where Will we all go when it's too late?

Before closing the disc with the superb " Whatsername" is another topic of 9 minutes (in the mirror with track 2) called " Homecoming" (again, with several sections, or if you want to use a price Manichaean movements). Not only serves to close the musical aesthetic of the disc: it is a risk that the band agrees and becomes a cathedral of punk rock.

spent 4 years and then came Breakdown 21th Century. Another concept album, again a narrative medium patches, again pushing the punk tracks to other banks. If at first reviewed the disc looks like a rerun, eventually grows to become perhaps the gem of the band.

American Idiot is an album more immediate, more urgent. Its power will probably never again be matched by Green Day, among other things because I would not have the element of surprise. But 21th Century Breakdown is the brother mature, more austere, less violent, more thoughtful.

'Born into Nixon, I WAS raised in hell.
A child welfare dwell Where the teamsters.
The last one born, the first one to run. My town
Was Blind refinery from the sun.
My generation is zero.
I never made it as a working class hero.

Closer The Wall floydiano than ever, Green Day used to study many more tricks yet, to be composed of items from the piano rather than guitar, the climates are in a more melodic with less predictable harmonies and some arrangements that more than a cult band would envy.

If the previous record referred to American Idiot which addresses the political and social marketing in this new effort, the focus is also the religious message and the compulsion to consume:

Can you hear the sound of the static noise? Blasting out in stereo

Cater to the class and the paranoid
Music to my nervous system
Advertising
love and religion on the airwaves
Murder Slogans on the brink of Corruption
Vision of blasphemy, war and peace
Screaming at you
I can not see a thing in the video
I can not hear a sound on the radio
In stereo in the static age

La sugerencia que logra Armstrong con sus letras es mucho más interesante porque se presenta más abstracta que en American Idiot . Véase si no:

True sounds of maniacal laughter
And the deaf-mute is misleading the choir
The punch line is a natural disaster
And it's sung by the unemployed
Fight fire with a riot
The class war is hanging on a wire
Because the martyr is a compulsive liar
When he said
"It's just a bunch of niggers throwing gas into the hysteria"

O como repite en " Restless Heart Syndrome ":

I'm elated, medicated
I am my own worst
enemy So what ails you is What You
impales you are your own worst enemy

More than American Idiot, 21th Century Breakdown is an album Orwellian dystopian much more confusing in nature and paranoid (but lucid and sympathetic). The problem with this latest album is to be listening to old to appreciate properly. Ie: from start to finish. The songs grow on the whole, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. American Idiot, while it is a great punk record, had a collection of 4 or 5 hits natural. 21th Century Breakdown not have that "luck? but it is a fundamental drive of the new century.

Not many bands have followed two essential pieces of music. Ten years ago nobody would have expected just this cute little group that sang songs and had a good rotation on MTV.

recommended immediate listening of these two discs, in order, running first American Idiot then move to the 21th Century Breakdown. And with blaring speakers, please.
